On March 8, 2013, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded a retired prison guard…
About two weeks ago, on June 15, 2021, Bloomberg Businessweek published an article by Olivia Carville titled, “Airbnb is Spending Millions of Dollars to Make Nightmares Go Away.” Even though the article shook up the public’s perception of Airbnb, it should come as no surprise.
In short, Carville discusses how in 2015, a “guest” – a user or renter of a property through the app – was sexually assaulted in the Airbnb property she’d reserved in New York City. The story didn’t make local news at the time, and Airbnb was never mentioned in court. It turned out that Airbnb had hushed the victim by compensating for her expenses in the fallout of such a traumatic life event. It wasn’t until more than 2 years after the incident that Airbnb arrived at a $7 million settlement with the victim.
The team responsible for handling such incidents at Airbnb is called the, “Trust-and-Safety Department.” The fact is that they’re anything but trustworthy and keepers of safety. Carville goes on to note that Aribnb spends around $50 million annually covering the costs of dangerous incidents that occur with hosts or guests, and damages to property. A lot of this money goes towards settlement agreements in which victims of crimes that occur in Airbnb properties, including involving property hosts, are rushed to sign settlement agreements and nondisclosure agreements. Airbnb’s goal is to silence victims and mitigate their liability, and this is plain wrong.
