Helicopter Crash Leaves Several Dead and Injured

January 30 brought an unexpected tragedy to Newport Beach, 45 miles south of Los Angeles, as a helicopter crashed into a residential street. The helicopter, which had four occupants at the time of the incident, collided with a house, causing the death of at least three people, including one who is believed to have been on the ground, and injuring two more. Although the residents of the house which became the site of impact were at home, they do not appear to be amongst those injured. The condition of the two people who were taken to hospital is not known at the time of writing.

What Happened during the Newport Beach Helicopter Crash?

The helicopter involved in the crash which shook a Newport Beach neighborhood late last month is believed to be a Robinson R44, part of the fleet owned by Revolution Airlines, a company offering pilot training and sightseeing tours for over five decades. Revolution Airlines appears to have a strong safety record to date.

Much of the information about the helicopter crash has come from eyewitness, who report seeing victims trapped in the wreckage, but being unable to assist for fear of making any injuries worse. The witness also stated seeing a person, who they felt was the pilot of the helicopter, lying injured but alive on the grass nearby. According to the witness, the helicopter fell from the sky like a rock, with the pilot seemingly trying to land in the street, before clipping the roof of the house in question and crashing to the ground. Although a large volume of fluid was present in the area, no fire broke out following the collision.

The street where the incident occurred is around 1 mile from John Wayne Airport, where the helicopter took off shortly before 2pm. The causes of the helicopter crash are currently being investigated by the FAA and NTSB.
