There is no such thing as a minor car accident. Even a fender bender can…
It may sound like something straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster, but the events of January 25 were all too real for the California Highway Patrol officer whose vehicle was rammed by a suspect. When the California Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop a stolen vehicle at around 1.30am in the Dana Strand parking lot, the driver rammed the patrol car, rendering it useless. While car accidents in Los Angeles don’t tend to be quite so dramatic, it’s not unusual for crashes and collisions to happen. However, disabling a patrol car by ramming it, then driving away, isn’t typical. Nor are the events which unfolded once the driver of the stolen vehicle fled the scene.
Of course, when a driver, stolen vehicle or not, rams a police car, they don’t get to just drive away and get on with their daily business. Although the patrol vehicle was out of service after the collision, the officer fired some shots at the departing perpetrator, but did not manage to stop him escaping. This lead to a large-scale chase involving multiple California Highway Patrol vehicles, police helicopters and K-9 units, who eventually located the man after around three hours. The suspect was located in a restroom at the Monarch Beach Resort, after abandoning the vehicle a mile or so away from the scene of the crime. Both the California Highway Patrol officer involved in the collision and the suspect, who sustained a gunshot injury, were brought to hospital for medical treatment.
If you’ve spent any time at all on Los Angeles roads, you’ll know how risky they can be to drive on. The sheer volume of vehicles using the road network means there are a lot of car accidents, some far more severe than others. Of course, if you’re involved in a collision, even a seemingly minor one can be a very upsetting and confusing experience.
