Drugs and Alcohol Can Leave Your Car Flying, Literally

We’ve all heard of using drugs and alcohol to get high, but we’re fairly sure that nobody actually expected it to happen quite so literally as it did in Santa Ana, California recently. If you’ve been online over the past few days, you’ll more than likely have seen the shocking photos of a car wedged into the second floor of a dental office building, and quite possibly thought that it was a doctored image. Sadly, the photo is real and, comments about getting high aside proves that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is no laughing matter. In fact, the highly irresponsible behavior can have devastating consequences.

The Consequences of Driving under the Influence

According to Orange County officials, the car, driven by a driver who was allegedly intoxicated, hit the center divider in the road, lifting off and flying towards the dentist’s office. After impacting hard enough to embed the front end of the vehicle in the second floor, the car caused a fire in the building, which was, thankfully, quickly extinguished by the fire crews in attendance. Despite the dramatic car accident, the driver and passenger both escaped with just minor injuries.

If you, or a loved one, have been the victim of a car accident, DUI or otherwise, you may be all too familiar with that fact that innocent parties don’t always come away as relatively unscathed as the occupants of the flying car. Despite significant advances in technology, much of which is intended to make driving safer, the number of car accidents in Los Angeles and other US regions is actually on the rise. It’s not a small increase either – there’s been around a 14% increase in car accidents between 2014 and 2016. 2017 figures are not yet available, but a further rise would, sadly, not be surprising.

Distracted driving, where the driver’s attention is captured by their smartphone, passengers, GPS unit or something else, is one of the cited reasons for the increase in car accidents. Car accident lawyers in Los Angeles have recently encountered cases where the driver was distracted by raging wildfires. Another common factor contributing to car accidents is the improved economy meaning more people can afford to drive. The third factor, lenient laws, and legislation are where a Los Angeles car accident attorney can really prove their worth.
